Expanding Educational Outreach: NaBa-MAR Materials in Action at Researchers’ Night

On September 26, 2025, the ClimEx-PE team hosted a public outreach event titled “The Water Beneath Our Feet – Environmental Impacts of Missing Waters and the ClimEx-PE Project” at ELTE’s Faculty of Education and Psychology in Budapest.

This session was one of the first occasions where the newly developed NaBa-MAR educational materials were used in a public setting. Prior to the event, project researchers met with hydrogeology students to discuss how they will apply these materials in future school visits. The students are now actively involved in the dissemination process, preparing to deliver interactive presentations in secondary and primary schools.

The session addressed one of today’s most pressing environmental challenges: how to mitigate the impacts of extreme hydrological events and ensure safe water supply for both humanity and ecosystems. As the main freshwater reserves are stored in aquifers, the vulnerability and buffering capacity of groundwater systems are critical. The ClimEx-PE project promotes a novel, nature-based approach to Managed Aquifer Recharge (NaBa-MAR), integrating local-scale techniques with community involvement to address regional hydroclimatic extremes.

One participant engaged in a dynamic roundtable-style discussion with the presenters. The conversation led to an exchange of contact details and a potential collaboration on future water-related outreach activities.

This session demonstrated the practical application of the NaBa-MAR toolkit and highlighted the importance of student-led engagement in building awareness around groundwater and climate resilience.
