Films, Climate Change and NaBa-MAR®: ClimEx-PE Presented at BAS 2026 in Timișoara

Andrea Velich represented the ClimEx-PE project at the British and American Studies / XXXIV Conference, held at the West University of Timișoara between 14–16 May 2026. The conference, organised under the theme “Reconfiguring Borders and Boundaries in/through the Lens of Literature, Language and Culture”, brought together researchers from a wide range of fields, including literature, cultural studies, language studies, translation studies and gender studies.

Andrea delivered her presentation, entitled “Can Films Help Us to Cope with Climate Change?”, in the Cultural Studies session on Friday, 15 May 2026. Her talk explored how British cinema can contribute to climate awareness by presenting different filmic representations of sustainable cities, water-related challenges and climate-related innovations. The presentation discussed examples ranging from documentaries, such as David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet, to disaster films, including Flood, showing how films can both educate and engage wider audiences on the consequences of climate change.

The presentation also addressed the responsibility of the film industry in promoting more sustainable practices, including initiatives such as greener production standards, the albert carbon calculator, and the “Culture Declares Emergency” movement launched with the involvement of major cultural institutions such as BFI and BAFTA.

A key part of the presentation focused on water-related climate challenges, including flash floods and droughts, and introduced NaBa-MAR® as a promising nature-based solution within the Water4All EU-funded ClimEx-PE project. Andrea also screened Dániel Galsi’s short film on ClimEx-PE, which visualises the project’s approach and helped make its scientific messages accessible to an interdisciplinary audience.

The presentation generated lively interest, with several questions from the audience about ClimEx-PE and its contribution to climate adaptation. Andrea’s participation offered an excellent opportunity to present the project in an international humanities context and to highlight the role of visual storytelling, education and interdisciplinary communication in addressing climate change.
